Behaviour Parent Training Workshops

The behaviour parent-training workshops are designed to provide parents with relevant information based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis. Each workshop is facilitated by a Behaviour Consultant who provide parents with strategies to address some of the common challenges faced by individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

How do parents register?

Behaviour 101

Parents who attend this 2 part workshop will have an open discussion around behaviour; its definition, function, and how to promote or reduce a target behaviour. This workshop will provide parents with a framework for understanding the basic principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis. Parents will leave this workshop with information and strategies to feel confident in addressing behaviours across many settings and situations.

Eating Strategies

This workshop focuses on the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorders and difficulties with eating and feeding. Parents will be provided with strategies to address common eating challenges such as food selectivity and refusal as well as problem behaviour during meal times.

Anxiety & ASD

This workshop is designed for parents of children 7 to 12 years old who are looking for the following:

  • To gain a better understanding of stress in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • To learn practical strategies for teaching awareness & coping skills
  • To obtain an interactive opportunity with other families.

Please note: This workshop includes a take-home exercise component.

Toileting Strategies

Do you want to know how to succeed at toilet training your child? This workshop explores the challenges of toilet training children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Strategies (based on Applied Behaviour Analysis) to improve your child’s toileting skills are presented. These strategies include modeling, prompting, shaping, reinforcement, visual cues, and scripting. Parents/Caregivers have the opportunity to discuss specific toileting difficulties.

Sleep Strategies

Does your child have a difficult time going to sleep or staying in their bed? Does your child have challenging behaviors in the evening? Would you like to learn how to create a bed time routine for your child with ASD?

As part of this workshop we will discuss:

  • Common Sleep Challenges
  • Components of a Successful Sleep
  • Dealing with Challenging Behaviors
  • Managing Sleep Challenges
  • Using Reinforcement and Fading it Out

Sexuality & ASD

Do you have questions about your child or teen with ASD’s sexual development? Does your child or teen engage in “inappropriate sexual behaviour”?  Would you like to learn how to teach social boundaries to your child or teen with ASD?  This workshop is designed for parents of children 8 to 17 years old.  As part of this workshop we will discuss:

  • Typical sexual development
  • How characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can impact sexuality
  • Specific concerns regarding ‘sexualized’ behaviours
  • Strategies for intervening with inappropriate or high-risk sexual behaviour
  • Resources for additional support
