Course description
When teaching new skills to people with autism, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) has the longest history of effective evidence-based success. This introductory level workshop will provide an overview of the principles of ABA, highlight how these principles can be applied in everyday settings, and clarify the differences between ABA and Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI). Participants will be introduced to several ABA teaching methods that can be used to develop a wide variety of skills in different settings with different age groups.This workshop will benefit anyone who provides direct support, therapy, or education to individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Learning objectives

Participants will:
  • Principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) including prompting, reinforcement and generalization
  • How to apply ABA principles when teaching new skills
  • Intensive, Natural Environment and Incidental Teaching methods
  • Data collection techniques

    Participants will meet the objectives listed above through a combination of: video presentation and quiz.

    This online course will be offered year-round, and you can enroll anytime.

    Speaker Biography
    Adriana KarkaAdriana Karka has been with Geneva Centre for Autism since 2007 first as a Provincial Autism Resource Consultant and currently as a member of the Training Institute Faculty. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto and post-graduate studies at Montclair State University in New Jersey, Adriana has spent her working career in the field of autism and special education.
    Adriana has been an accomplished music therapist and behaviour specialist for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other intellectual and developmental disabilities for 15 years. She previously spent five years with the Autism Intervention Program at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). In addition, Adriana provided early intervention services and music therapy in both Chicago’s Easter Seals Developmental Centre as well as the Montclair State University’s Music Therapy clinic “Music Aids Growth in Children” (MAGIC) in New Jersey.
    Adriana is fully bilingual and provides training and consultation both in English and French. She is also fluent in Lithuanian and has travelled to Eastern Europe as a guest lecturer on autism and special education.
    In her present role at the Geneva Centre for Autism, Adriana is responsible for travelling to and providing training in Canadian and international communities, creating and developing training courses, and consulting various medical and educational personnel in their work with individuals on the autism spectrum.

    Completion Policy
    All course materials must be viewed electronically through elearning.autism.net unless otherwise instructed. To receive a Certificate of Participation, participants must achieve 80% (4/5) on the quiz.

    Enrolment Policy
    Once participants enroll themselves in the course they are granted access to all of the course materials for 30 days. You have 30 days to complete this course. You need to complete all of the graded course elements including the quiz within those 30 days. After 30 days you will automatically be un-enrolled from the course.

    Refund Policy
    Refunds will be honoured within 7 days of purchase, as long as the enrolment key is not used, and the course is not begun. Beyond the 7 day period, refunds will no longer be processed, even if the enrolment key is not used.
