The objective of the Supporting Children with ASD in an Inquiry and Play-Based Learning Environment Course for Educators, is for participants to learn about the Kindergarten model, specifically in terms of how to help students with Autism Spectrum disorder function in a play-based learning environment. The 5-module course will educate participants on the impact of play in kindergarten children with ASD; how to identify prerequisites for play; and how to use behavioural strategies to support a child with ASD acquire and expand play and language skills.

This online course will be offered year-round, and you can enroll anytime.

Course Objectives

By participating in this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand how play is impacted in kindergarten aged children with ASD
  • Identify prerequisites for play
  • Use behavioural strategies to support a child with ASD acquire and expand play and language skills

Topic Outline

Module 1 – What is Play-Based Learning?
At the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the objectives of Play-Based Inquiry Learning in Kindergarten
  • Define the four frames of learning in the Kindergarten Program
Module 2 – Benefits of Interactive Play
At the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the benefits of interactive play
  • Identify why children with ASD may have difficulty engaging in the social world
  • Understand the criteria for an ASD diagnosis and its impact on play
Module 3 – Learning to Play
At the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the different types of play
  • Understand the difficulties of certain types of play for children with ASD
Module 4 – Simple vs. Complex Play
At the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Identify if the child has functional play skills
  • Describe the difference between simple and complex play
Module 5 – Planning Process
At the end of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Identify behavioural strategies to support the learning of your student with ASD

Course Structure/ Requirements

This course will be delivered entirely online at http://elearning.autism.net. You will use your elearning account to login to the course. Your detailed account information will be provided to you upon registration.

Once you are enrolled in the course, you will have access to your account for 120 days. To obtain your certificate you MUST complete all course requirements within this time.

The course is comprised of 5 modules. Participants will engage in various self-paced learning activities. This course is approximately 2.5 hours in length, including interactive activities and quiz. Lessons in each module are presented as a series of video recordings, and interactive lessons. Participants must complete all course activities and a final assessment.

Grading Policy

Graded Course Activities

Participants will be evaluated through a final assessment, consisting of multiple choice, true or false, and match questions.

  • Your final score on this assessment should be at least 85%
  • There will be 2 attempts for the assessment

Late Work Policy

You need to complete the final assessment within 120 days from the start date.

Viewing Grades in elearning.autism.net

Marks you received from the final assessment will be posted to the elearning.autism.net Grade Book. Click on the Grades link on the left navigation to view your marks. You will be able to view your final assessment grade immediately after each attempt.

Passing grade

The passing grade for this course is 85%.

Participation

Students are expected to participate in all activities and the final assessment listed above.

Complete Final Assessment

The final assessment for this course must be completed electronically through elearning.autism.net unless otherwise instructed. The final assessment will only become accessible after viewing all modules. Once the final assessment becomes available, participants will have the option to complete it immediately, or at a later time within their 120-day registration period. There will be two attempts for the assessment, and the highest scores among your attempts will count as your final grade.

Requests to Drop This Course

Once participants enroll themselves in the course, they are granted access to all of the course materials for 120 days. After 120 days, you will automatically be un-enrolled of the course. Should a participant decide they are no longer want to achieve a certificate, they can simply stop logging in.
