The Training Institute Education Pathways

The Training Institute at Geneva Centre for Autism has a wide variety of course offerings to choose from. But at times knowing where to start is a challenge. The Education Pathways is meant to help you through your journey of learning the ins and outs of living with or working within the world of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Phase 1 - Map the Terrain:
Phase1Recent diagnosis?  Thinking of the Autism Field as a career choice?   These courses are musts for you!  Courses cover the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Asperger's Syndrome (AS), and highlight the common challenges faced by families, schools & by individuals on the spectrum.   They will provide you with a basic foundation of knowledge about ASD.

•    Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
•    Introduction to Asperger Syndrome (AS)

Who Should Attend & Course Focus:
Friends & family of newly diagnosed individuals
Teachers, EA's new to ASD/AS
People considering a career working in ASD

Phase 2 - The Journey Begins:
Phase2OK so you’ve laid the groundwork for basic understanding of ASD or AS.   Now you want a bit more in terms of next steps and expansion of that knowledge.    These courses outline why the characteristics/challenges of ASD exist and introduce the best practice strategies for addressing challenges and supporting individuals' on the spectrum.  It is in this phase that the core principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) are introduced.

•    Why Do They Do That? Understanding Behaviour in Autism Spectrum Disorder
•    Teaching Strategies for Home and School: The Geneva Centre Model for Effective Intervention

Who Should Attend & Course Focus:
Those who have chosen a career in ASD and families of those with an ASD diagnosis wanting to begin learning how to proceed.    You have basic information & are looking to expand understanding & explore strategies with increased focus on specific areas such as behaviour or learning styles

Phase 3 - The Crossroads:
Phase3There are many specialized areas in need of support in ASD. It's time to decide what you're going to focus on, and dive in deep. Courses assume you know the basics of ASD & ABA, and focus includes application by practicing formulation & implementation of best-practice techniques. This level includes active learning applications.

•    Let's Make a Difference: Bullying, Prevention/Intervention & Autism Spectrum Disorder
•    It's Only Natural: Sexuality and Autism Spectrum Disorder
•    Autism Intervener Certificate (AIC) Courses Level 1

Who Should Attend & Course Focus:
Foundational knowledge of ASD & basic strategies is in place. You are a parent or professional making ASD your area of subject matter expertise.   You will learn application of strategy.

Phase 4 - The High Road – Certificate Courses:
Phase4Designed to develop your skills in all critical areas: observation, data collection, problem solving & creativity. Through independent work & assignments you will demonstrate both understanding & the ability to use a variety of support & teaching techniques. This level includes active learning and applying choices to the strategies you have learned.

•    Autism Intervener Certificate Course, Level 2: A Positive Approach to Behaviour Intervention
•    Autism Intervener Certificate Course, Level 2: Teaching Social Skills and Social Understanding
•    Using the Principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to Teach Individuals with ASD
•    Autism/ASD Psychology Certificate Training Course

Who Should Attend & Course Focus:
Your knowledge of strategies & applications is in place and you will learn how to choose the most appropriate strategy for an individualized program.
