This course is designed for psychological associates and psychologists only. The diagnostic criteria for Pervasive Developmental Disorders/Autism Spectrum Disorders will be reviewed as well as assessment practices to determine whether or not children and adolescents meet the criteria.

Participants will practice with case studies and group discussion and will be required to submit a summary of the diagnostic process for a child with whom they work. There will also be an emphasis on functional behavioural assessment. Strategies to address the most common assessment issues will be reviewed, as will strategies to address the presenting issues of children/adolescents with autism.

This is a 15-hour instructional course, taking place over three days.

About the Speaker

Robert Gauthier is a psychological associate with the ASD team at Toronto District School Board. He has been in this position since 2006. Prior to that, he spent one year as a clinical supervisor for the School Age Behaviour/ Communication Service at Geneva Centre for Autism and continues to teach for the Training Institute. Before moving to Ontario in 2005, Robert spent 21 years as a school psychologist in Newfoundland and Labrador. The last six of those years was working specifically with students on the autism spectrum. In 2009 he developed the Autism/ ASD Psychologists Certificate Training Program at Geneva Centre for Autism, which he has now taught several times.
