Time: 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Session: Session #6
Learning Objectives:
- Review evidence-based strategies for promoting daily happiness among adults with autism.
- Described the importance of relying on intervention procedures that have an underlying evidence base to demonstrate the procedures’ effectiveness.
- Nstrategies will be presented for identifying indices of happiness and unhappiness among adults with autism who experience difficulty expressing their private emotional experiences in conventional ways.
- Provide procedures such as, for example, embedding choice into routine events, establishing relationships with important caregivers, providing frequent access to systematically identified preferences
Outline of Presentation:
This presentation will describe evidence-based strategies for promoting daily happiness among adults with autism. Initially, what constitutes a scientific evidence base will be described along with the importance of relying on intervention procedures that have an underlying evidence base to demonstrate the procedures’ effectiveness. Next, strategies will be presented for identifying indices of happiness and unhappiness among adults with autism who experience difficulty expressing their private emotional experiences in conventional ways. Subsequently, evidence-based strategies for increasing happiness and decreasing unhappiness will be summarized. The latter summary will include procedures such as, for example, embedding choice into routine events, establishing relationships with important caregivers, providing frequent access to systematically identified preferences, and how to alter daily activities that are often accompanied by indicators of unhappiness among adults with autism on the severe end of the spectrum of autism disorders. Background research that supports the effectiveness of the described procedures will also be presented and summarized where relevant.
