From Conflict to Collaboration: Advocating Successfully for Your Child

This interactive session will support parents in naviagting the school system by helping them learn how to:
Ask the right questions in IEP and IPRC meetings
Present evidence for how their child learns best
Secure necessary supports and services
Understand the Human Rights Code (the duty to accomodate) and the special education legislation
Effectively resolve problems
Form effective partnerships with school staff
Manage important transitions from the child/youth world of school to the adult world of meaningful community participation, employment, and post-secondary education
This session will be facilitated by Dr. Lindy Zaretsky, Executive Director of Geneva Centre for Autism who prior to this appointment spent 22 years in education as a teacher in K-12 classrooms, a special education consultant, principal and superintendent responsible for instruction across regular and special education K-12 and leadership development. Her doctoral work focused on parent advocacy in schools.
