This interactive session will support parents in naviagting the school system by helping them learn how to:
- Ask the right questions in IEP and IPRC meetings
- Present evidence for how their child learns best
- Secure necessary supports and services
- Understand the Human Rights Code (the duty to accomodate) and the special education legislation
- Effectively resolve problems
- Form effective partnerships with school staff
- Manage important transitions from the child/youth world of school to the adult world of meaningful community participation, employment, and post-secondary education
This session will be facilitated by Dr. Lindy Zaretsky, Executive Director of Geneva Centre for Autism who prior to this appointment spent 22 years in education as a teacher in K-12 classrooms, a special education consultant, principal and superintendent responsible for instruction across regular and special education K-12 and leadership development. Her doctoral work focused on parent advocacy in schools.
