THE AUTISTS 2010

On behalf of Geneva Centre’s 4,000 children, youth and family members learning to live with autism, we extend sincere gratitude to everyone who supported THE AUTISTS 2010 at Koerner Hall.

Celebrating art, jazz, genius and success!

As our first major fundraising gala, we are delighted to report that this inaugural event exceeded beyond all expectations.

THE AUTISTS netted approximately $177,000 for our social skill building programs and to help fund our new resource centre which will be Canada’s first specialized facility for youth with autism.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our sponsors: Andora Graphics, Wave 94.7, Underline Studio, Delaney Capital Management Ltd., Discount Car and Truck Rentals, The Fairmont Royal York Toronto, RBC, UBS, Verdiroc, Brandes Investment Partners, KPMG, Sionna Investment Managers and our advertising sponsors; Astral Media Outdoor, MacLaren Momentum, CBS Outdoor, Outdoor Broadcast Network and Pattison Outdoor Advertising. Thanks to each and every one of you for putting your faith in THE AUTISTS. Your generous support has contributed immeasurably to our success.

Thank you as well to the following for donating their services: Steve Howard of S2BN Entertainment Corp; Albert Schultz; Joe Di Salvia of Hayes Print Group, TELAV, Midge Flowers; Beck Taxi and Intelligarde Security.

And to our wonderful Gala Steering Committee, Board of Directors and team of Volunteers – thank you for your hard work, dedication, enthusiasm and inspiration. You turned our vision into reality.

THE AUTISTS kicked off with a Gala Reception consisting of over 300 collectors, donors and Geneva Centre for Autism supporters. All were greeted with a glass of bubbly, gourmet delicacies, live jazz and a serenade by aspiring jazz songstress, 18-year-old Samantha Mutis. Samantha told guests about her difficult childhood journey living with autism until discovering a world of possibilities through The Centre - culminating in a scholarship at the University of Toronto’s jazz program.

From there everyone moved into the Theatre for a live art auction, brilliantly curated and MC’d by Charles Pachter. Auctioneer Albert Schultz injected humour into his auctioneering of pieces by Canada’s top artists. A highlight of the art auction was the offering of an oil on canvas by best-selling artist Peter Doig. Excitement reached a peak as New York galleries battled it out in long distance bids that culminated in a $160,000 sale.

THE AUTISTS concert, MC’d by CBC producer and Host Jeff Goodes, showcased 18 year old international jazz prodigy with autism, Matt Savage who wowed the audience with his rare genius. Mid way through his set, Matt was joined by Samantha in a moment that personified the point of THE AUTISTS – namely that kids with autism can achieve incredible potential if they are given the support and training they need.

Legendary singer-song writer Chaka Khan provided the perfect finale to a great event . Chaka’s powerful voice and unique jazz style ensured that guests were sent on their way happy to have participated in this first of what will be many successful galas.

Planning will soon be already underway for THE AUTISTS II. We’re looking for more committee members.
