Date: Thursday, October 23, 2008
Time: 3:30pm - 5:00pm
Session: Session 13

Outline of Presentation

In our consultation to educators we often hear of their struggles working with students whose abilities are at a more concrete level than their other students with autism. Teachers often find it difficult to identify the interests of these students and to identify and develop meaningful goals and activities. This session will review several of the strategies we have found useful in our work with these challenging students.

The focus of this session will be particularly on:

  1. assessing the interests and skills of these students
  2. identifying visual cues that are meaningful to the concrete learner
  3. using meaningful routines as a mode of instruction and
  4. developing educational activities that are attainable and will contribute to the student’s independence.
