Outline of Presentation

This presentation will review the development of a research program at UCDHSC studying the preliminary efficacy of a manualized cognitive behavioral group treatment approach to reducing the severity and interference of anxiety symptoms in children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.  Components of the intervention will be discussed along with preliminary results of the studies conducted to date, including progress on a randomized controlled trial of the intervention.  Videotaped examples will be shown throughout the presentation.

Objectives:

  1. The learner will identify the components of a cognitive-behavioral group treatment for children with ASD.
  2. The learner will identify the modifications necessary for delivery of a CBT protocol for children with ASD.
  3. The learner will state preliminary findings and implications of a recent study looking at the preliminary efficacy of a manualized group treatment for anxiety in children with ASD.
