Date: Thursday, October 23, 2008
Time: 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Session: Session 4

Outline of Presentation

Problem behaviour can often be considered a form of communication.  If individuals with autism are trying to tell us something through their challenging behaviour, then we need to listen very carefully. This session is an introduction to the process of Functional Communication Training (FCT) , one component of a positive behaviour support plan.  FCT involves identifying the purpose or function of an individual’s challenging behavior and then teaching an appropriate communication alternative that will serve the same purpose for that individual. This session will describe a practical, step-by-step process for identifying the function of the behavior and teaching replacement skills.  Participants will have the opportunity to view and analyze illustrative videotape examples.
