Session: Session 1
Outline of Presentation
Although there are a variety of treatments available to address both the social and communicative problem areas of autism, treatments to address the repetitive behaviors of children with autism are very limited in both type and number. Exposure and response prevention (E/RP) is the first choice of behavioral treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and the Groden Center is researching the use of E/RP to treat the very similar repetitive behaviors associated with autism. This research is part of a National Institute of Health (NIH) grant, in conjunction with James Bodfish, PhD at the University of Chapel Hill. For the research, we have developed a version of E/RP treatment that can be implemented by parents, teachers, or clinicians to address the repetitive behaviors of children with autism. An explanation of ERP will be presented, as well as examples of how this procedure can be implemented.
