Dr. Timothy M. Buie is a member of the Pediatric Gastroenterology group at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA where he serves on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Buie manages a large clinical practice that extends worldwide, which includes a significant number of children with autism.
Dr. Buie is also on the staff of LADDERS, (Learning And Developmental
Disorders Evaluation and Rehabilitation Service), which is a
multi-specialty collaborative program sponsored by Massachusetts
General Hospital serving patients with autism and other developmental
disorders.
Dr. Buie graduated medical school from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He completed an Internal Medicine and Pediatrics combined residency at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, CT where he received the George Brown Longstreth award for Humanness. Following residency, he continued fellowship training at Yale/New Haven Hospital, completing this training in 1990. He achieved the honor of being presented the Fellow Teaching Award by the Department of Pediatrics, Yale University School of Medicine. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Buie began a pediatric gastroenterology practice serving patients throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In 1998, he joined the Massachusetts General Hospital Pediatric Gastroenterology group. Dr. Buie has written about the gastrointestinal (GI) issues identified in children with autism as well as GI issues seen in children with Down’s Syndrome. He is a founding developer of the Autism Treatment Network (ATN), a multi-center national organization of academic programs located throughout the U.S. and Canada that medically manage children with autism. The ATN is working to determine and implement best clinical practices for the medical evaluation and care of children with autism. The ATN is part of the Autism Speaks Network www.autismspeaks.org Dr. Buie lectures worldwide regarding GI connections to autism and also biomedical treatments, dietary interventions and nutritional treatments of children with autism. In 2001, Dr. Buie was presented The Margaret L. Bauman, M.D. Award for Excellence in Serving the Autism Community as an Outstanding Medical Professional. He is participating in a variety of clinical and translational research projects investigating gastrointestinal and behavioral problems in children with autism. Dr. Buie has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Canada’s Globe and Mail, El Nuevo Dia, San Juan, Puerto Rico among other publications and has appeared on BBC television as well as MSNBC.
