A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words - Designing and Implementing Visual Aids for Home and Community PDF Print

A Picture is Worth a Thousand WordsDo you often find yourself repeating instructions to your child?  Does your child crave structure, routine, order and/or predictability? Do you feel your child’s learning is enhanced through visual materials and want ideas on how to make various visual learning tools?  This workshop is designed to answer these and the many questions parents have about what, where, when and why to use visual aids in their home and community.

This 2-part session focuses on the use of visual aids tools for increasing your child’s receptive language abilities, independence and pro-social behaviours.  Group discussions focuses on what visual aids would be particularly useful for a variety of situations, settings and learning goals and how to adapt visual aids to each child’s needs.  Parents are provided with specific ideas on how to create visual aids with time set aside to create some of these to take home.

As a result of participation in this session, each participant will be able to:

  • Explain why visual aids can assist their child’s learning
  • Describe how to use visual aids to enhance receptive language abilities
  • Describe how visual aids may assist their child’s ability to communicate more effectively
  • Describe how to structure the home environment with visual aids
  • Identify various visual aids which will assist in their child’s learning
  • Design a variety of visual teaching materials for home and community

This workshop is only open to clinical clients of the Geneva Centre for Autism who live in GTA.
