All parents who have registered with Geneva Centre for Autism and have spoken to one of our Social Workers are encouraged to attend The Foundation sessions at any time during their involvement with the Centre. What are The Foundations? Six parent education sessions including the following topics:
Each Foundation is offered once per month. See the parent calendar for dates and times. How will they help parents? The Foundations provide an essential and comprehensive ‘building block’ of knowledge aimed at empowering parents, building their confidence and facilitating their ability to make choices about ways to intervene in their child’s development. They offer an opportunity for parents to gain insight into behaviour and communication interventions for their child as well as to share common issues and concerns associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The Foundations have clear “outcomes” or expectations about what parents will learn about Autism Spectrum Disorders and what they should be able to do as a result of having participated in the sessions. Parents will receive helpful handouts and resources. How do parents register? Call (416) 322-7877 ext. 0
F1 Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders Top
F2 Intervention Options Top This session provides a framework for understanding the wide range of treatment approaches and principles considered when developing an intervention plan for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Written material regarding various approaches and relevant contact information are provided.
F3 Communication Top During this session, parents are introduced to what ‘communication‘ means for their child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) discuss their role, provide an overview of communication and outline the Speech and Language services available at Geneva Centre for Autism and within community-based settings.
F4 Sensory Motor Development Top Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders often experience sensory and motor differences, which impact their behaviour, ability to acquire skills and general quality of life. This session helps parents understand these differences, assists them in determining if their child is experiencing these differences and outlines some helpful strategies.
F5 Understanding Behaviour Top This session presents an overview of the basic principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis. Topics covered include defining behaviour, functional analysis of behaviour, understanding antecedents and consequences and using reinforcement. Emphasis is placed on the communicative function of behaviour.
F6 Learning and teaching Top During this session, various learning styles typical of individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are presented. Topics include the importance of recognizing these learning styles and how teaching styles may be adapted to accommodate particular learning style. |
