Joanne's Story PDF Print
JoanneJo is looking forward to having an adult setting where she can meet up with her friends.

Jo Drassinower is an independent and successful young woman with a flourishing career as a Business Partner in the Lemon and Allspice Cookery catering service. This organization helps trainees with disabilities learn basic cooking skills, provides catering to businesses and community groups and sells its own products at select retail outlets in Toronto.

Jo enjoys her independence and although she loves having her own apartment where she can hang out watching TV and reading, she doesn’t spend a huge amount of time there by herself as she prefers to be out socialising with her friends.

Looking to the future with Geneva Centre
Having accessed services at Geneva Centre for Autism for many years, Jo is now a member of the Centre’s Joint Advisory Group, providing guidance and advice on services that are run for children and teenagers.

In addition to undertaking this strategic role, Jo continues to access the services the Centre offers its adult clients, such as the Adult Program and the Evening Social Group. As well as going on outings with the other members to malls, dinners and entertainment, Jo and her friends at the Evening Social Group have the opportunity to relax and play games such as Scrabble while at the Centre.

A suitable setting
Jo is quick to emphasize how much she enjoys seeing the kids when she attends the Geneva Centre but she is also clear that there is a real need for the adult clients to have their own space. A building focussed solely on adults will bring lots of advantages, explains Jo:

‘The new building will be a lot better for the adults. We’ll be able to do what we want. If we have our own space we can bring our own things along without having to worry about the kids.’

Jo can also envisage the increased opportunities that the new building will bring:

‘Maybe there will be more groups for adults on offer. There will be enough space for groups to be held throughout the day.’

With the new building, comes new possibilities for Jo and her friends at the Geneva Centre for Autism.
