Advanced Communication Skills for Verbal Children with an ASD Print

Date/Time: January 15  (9:00am – 3:30pm)

Description:This session will focus on increasing the language skills of children with an ASD who are using speech as their primary form of communication but require additional support to increase their receptive and expressive language skills.  Participants will increase their understanding of how to assist the child to increase their means of communication (increasing vocabulary, building sentence structure, increasing appropriate grammar, etc) and increase their communicative functions (requesting, protesting, commenting, etc.). Strategies to enhance comprehension will also be reviewed. At the end of this session, each participant will be able to:

  • Define means of communication and describe methods to enhance the communicative means of the verbal child with an ASD
  • Define functions of communications and describe methods to enhance the communicative functions of the verbal child with an ASD
  • Describe strategies to enhance the comprehension skills of a verbal child with an ASD
