Description: Effective Strategies for Teaching Basic Math Skills (AM)
This workshop will outline and focus on the use of ABA instructional approaches for teaching “functional” math skills to students with an ASD. Emphasis will be placed on the student’s ability to generalize and maintain these skills in practical/ functional applications. In addition to a comprehensive “basic skills” handout, participants will have the opportunity to observe demonstrations using a variety of materials and resources as well as view video presentations of student participation.
Emphasis will also be placed on the importance and use of communication strategies in order to facilitate the expressive and/or receptive language of children with developmental disabilities.
Literacy Strategies for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (PM)
This practical workshop will focus on using ABA instructional approaches to teach motivating, functional and meaningful words and sentences to children with as ASD as well as other developmental disabilities. Strategies for using a “whole word”, “language-experience” approach will be provided as well as strategies to develop and improve visual discrimination and readiness skills. In addition to a practical handout, participants will have an opportunity to observe demonstrations using a variety of materials and resources as well as view videos of student participation.
Emphasis will also be placed on the importance and use of communication strategies in order to facilitate the expressive and/or receptive language of children with developmental disabilities.
