Canadian autism sector leader recognized for 25 years of transforming leadership

TORONTO, February 8, 2010 – Margaret Whelan, the Executive Director of Geneva Centre for Autism has been honoured by the organization’s Board of Directors and staff for “25 years of transforming leadership” in advancing autism care and service in Toronto, Ontario and internationally.

Ms. Whelan received the special tribute as part of the organization’s annual employee long-service awards where 44 employees were acknowledged for their dedication to Canada’s leading autism service, training and support organization.

“Marg’s outstanding track record of leadership and innovation in the autism sector throughout the world is driven by her dedication to putting the needs of families first” cited the President of Geneva Centre’s Board of Directors.

From an agency of 20 staff serving fewer than 100 families, the Centre now operates with 260 full and part time staff, providing life changing services and support to over 4000 families each year.

Under Ms Whelan’s leadership, Geneva Centre for Autism has continually been at the cutting edge of effective interventions for individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Under her stewardship, the Geneva Centre for Autism Training Institute is recognized as Ontario’s centre of excellence in care and service training.

Ms Whelan also leads a team of experts responsible for hosting the pre-eminent, biennial world conference on autism here in Toronto. In 2008, 2,400 physicians, education and child care professionals and families attended the Geneva Centre for Autism International Symposium. The 2010 conference is being held in November at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

”Marg is an inspiration because she transforms ideas into action.  Her commitment to the community is reflected in our organizational mission to ensure individuals with autism are engaged and accepted in society,” says the Centre’s Manager of Quality Assurance, Jennifer Cantello-Daw.
